Wow. It has been four years since my last post.
Obviously this didn't turn into the "Daily Chronicle" I'd hoped it would be.
Nevertheless it's high time to "ante up" my online presence -- so I'm going to give this another shot.
Here's where my career has taken me in the interim...
-- I spent two years working as an investigative reporter at the Standard Journal in Rexburg ending in late 2010.
-- I spent a year freelancing for the Standard Journal, the Post Register and Intermountian Farm and Ranch magazine in Idaho Falls, the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello and Teton Valley News in Driggs.
-- In late 2011, the Post Register offered me a job as an education reporter. I accepted and work full-time for thenewspaper and part-time for Farm and Ranch. I love the work.
Nate and Tony at the Movies:
-- In 2009, I started "Nate and Tony at the Movies" with Tony Potter, an English professor at BYU-Idaho (and one of my best friends) at the Standard Journal as a way to increase web traffic.
We wrote movies reviews primarily and it greatly enhanced the newspaper's website.
Eventually we started writing weekly entertainment columns in print and began a weekly radio show at a local radio station. It was great and so much fun!
We bought out the franchise from Pioneer Newspapers in 2011 and we syndicated our columns and reviews in five newspapers. We also launched a website and developed advertising fliers to fund the business.
-- It was going great -- unfortunately a freelancer's salary was not sufficient to expand a fledgling side-business. When I took a job at the Post Register, I simply did not have the time to devote to the business, so much to my chagrin I walked away in mid-2012.
-- I miss it tremendously, but it was the best thing at the time. And like it or not -- my first love is journalism and reporting so that takes precedence.
-- Tony has continued writing high quality entertainment stuff at www.youbringthepopcorn.com.
It's a great insightful site and I highly recommend it.
The purpose of this blog:
My first love is journalism -- so this blog will be devoted to it.
You'll get my thoughts on the people, events and trends in the industry.
You'll get insights from my daily reporting and occasionally an amusing anecdote.
I'll also post straight industry news and include links to noteworthy journalism anywhere I find it.
I hope you enjoy...
